XPe or DeTOS?

If you are new to Thin Clients, choosing the right client operating system can sometimes be difficult. Below is a quick summary to help you understand the differences.

Devon IT products can ship with one of two types of operating system. Windows XP Embedded/Windows Embedded Standard (XPe) or the Devon Terminal Operating System (DeTOS).

XPe DeTOS
Similar to XP:
  • Users are familiar with the UI and don’t need to be retrained
  • Applications that run on XP can run on XPe
  • Devices with an XP driver can be used with XPe

Simple:

One unified image includes all you need:

  • remote desktop clients
  • all mainstream Connection Broker clients
  • web browser
  • Java client
  • and more

More secure than XP because:

  • It is locked down (using RAM disk and write filter)
  • It can be centrally managed (remote upgrades, configuration, reimaging, etc) using Devon’s management software

Low touch:

  • You only need to upgrade when new features are required.
  • Thin Clients can be centrally managed and upgraded with Devon management software

More expensive than DeTOS because:

  • Microsoft license costs
  • Requires more resources than DeTOS

Recommended if you need to run a local application that doesn’t run on Linux (VPN Client, Internet Explorer and Active X controls, etc)
